When Fawn Meadow first got going in early 2020, my experience level with flowers was zero. Never grew them and most certainly never arranged them, but I was a new mom burned out with the corporate grind and we had just moved to a beautiful 9 acre property so naturally I became a flower farmer. An Instagram cliché come to life.
And while flowers were the starting point, they were never the point.
They always tell you to “start with why” when starting a business, and my why had nothing to do with flowers. At least not specifically.
The establishment of Fawn Meadow was about designing a lifestyle. About having the flexibility to be present for my daughter while creating a beautiful, functional space where we could grow things and make things and show others that living more sustainably doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. So I started by growing some flowers and selling them, and as I started getting more requests for actual arrangements and deliveries I decided to move into a proper retail space to more organically grow the design side of the business and expand into weddings.
After that first whirlwind wedding season, I remembered that having a storefront also means you need to fill it with stuff if you don’t want people to be annoyed when they come in (shocker). I’ve always fancied myself curator and I LOVE telling people what to like, but sourcing proved a bit challenging because if I was going to sell candles and soaps and things I wanted them to be good quality and non-toxic, but most products that fit the bill are either ugly, smell gross, or are ridiculously expensive. And while I appreciate expensive shit, I wanted something somewhere in the middle – products that felt luxe and were beautifully packaged, but at a more accessible price point. So channeling my inner Martha, I decided to make them myself. Democratizing little luxuries while also a proposing more sustainable purchasing habits.
So here we are. Flowers + weddings aren’t going anywhere, but we will be shifting gears a little to make space for the new, including more availability to visit us in Kennebunk.
